TNFD launches pre-COP30 nature disclosure adoption campaign

The Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) is ramping up efforts to promote global adoption ahead of the COP30 climate summit this November.
Since it released its final recommendations for corporate nature disclosures in 2023, 530 companies have committed to reporting on their nature and biodiversity impacts. Now, the TNFD is aiming to grow this number by extending the deadline by which firms are expected to publish their first disclosures to 2026.
The organisation will run an adoption webinar on April 2 to explain the benefits of creating TNFD-aligned nature disclosures to prospective adopters.
The new global adoption campaign will run through to COP30 in November, at which the taskforce will formally announce all of the new adopters since last Octoberâs biodiversity COP16, which took place in Cali, Colombia.
âBusiness and finance leaders are increasingly recognising that the resilience of their business and investment returns depends on the resilience of nature. By catalysing a shift in mindset, behaviour and public reporting, TNFD is helping organisations bring nature onto the balance sheet and into their risk and opportunity assessment. And that same shift is bringing to light a wealth of investment opportunities that align with a nature-positive future â one in which both nature and business are working in harmony,â said David Craig, Co-Chair of the TNFD.
TNFD early adopters: 54 countries and US$6.5 trillion in market cap
TNFDâs adopters so far come from 54 countries or areas (including 25 emerging markets), and the publicly-listed companies in the list represent over US$6.5 trillion in market capitalisation. Some have already published their first TNFD-aligned report.
In addition, 129 financial institutions are also registered as TNFD Adopters, representing US$17.7 trillion in assets under management, including 25% of the worldâs systemically important banks (GSIBs).
The TNFDâs recommendations on how to assess and report on nature and biodiversity impacts is aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which was signed in 2022 by 196 countries.
Specifically, the TNFD framework operationalises the requirements of Target 15 of the GBF, which calls on governments to require corporate reporting of nature-related dependencies, impacts and risks by 2030.
TNFD training and upskilling
Earlier this year, the TNFD launched a capacity-building platform to train companies as well as education providers on how to use its resources to understand, measure and report nature impacts.
