Amcor names first Chief Sustainability Officer

NYSE-listed packaging firm Amcor has named David Clark as its first Chief Sustainability Officer in a move to “elevate” the sustainability function.

Clark has been leading sustainability efforts at the company since 2012, most recently as Vice-President of Sustainability. As Amcor’s first Chief Sustainability Officer, he will report directly to newly-appointed CEO Peter Konieczny and have full responsibility for the firm’s sustainability strategies and policies, overseeing their implementation.

“Aligned with our purpose, we are elevating sustainability by creating the Chief Sustainability Officer role. This enables us to further increase our focus on the significant growth opportunity we can continue to unlock by commercialising solutions that drive the industry toward a circular economy for packaging, while reducing carbon footprint,” said Konieczny.

The firm recently named him as its new CEO after its CEO of nine years, Ron Delia, announced his retirement. Amid the current governance restructuring, Amcor has also appointed Fred Stephan in the new role of Chief Operating Officer.

Amcor’s climate targets

Amcor has a near-term target, approved by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 54.6%, and absolute Scope 3 emissions by 32.5% by 2033, from a 2022 base year.

It has also submitted a 2050 net zero target to the SBTi, which it expects to finalise by the end of 2024.

Its sustainability strategy involves purchasing externally-certified fibres, biomaterials and recycled content to manufacture packaging, making its products more recyclable, and adopting renewable electricity at manufacturing sites.

In 2023, Amcor’s total reported carbon footprint stood at 10.58 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent – down 10.2% from 2022.
